About Bern

Founded in 1191, occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and seat of the Swiss government since 1848, Bern has a long and varied history that can be felt to this day, most notably in the small alleyways of the old town. The city is home to about 140'000 inhabitants, and as the main seat of politics, it is the venue for many political, cultural and economic events. The city is situated in the center of the country, enclosed in the Aareschlaufe, a meander of the river Aare, which is used for swimming in summer.

Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most famous for its historical old town with its characteristic Lauben, Bern offers many points of interest like the Münster, the Bundeshaus and the Zytglogge.
